Yaroslavl is the capital and one of the most interesting cities of the Golden Ring. Yaroslavl, famous for its ancient history, has about 800 unique cultural and architectural monuments.
The first mention of Yaroslavl is found in the Tale of Bygone Years and dates back to 1071. However, the official date of the city’s formation is considered to be 1010. It was then, according to legend, that Prince Yaroslav the Wise fought a bear, which was set on him by pagans who did not want to obey the will of Yaroslav Vladimirovich. The prince won the fight with the beast. Only then did the locals submit to the prince, who founded a wooden fortress at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl, from which the city began.

The Physics Department of the P.G. Demidov Yaroslavl State University was established on July 7, 1976 by dividing the Physics and Mathematics Department into the Physics and Mathematics Departments. From January 1, 2025, the Physics Department was renamed into the Physics and Engineering Department. Students are trained in five areas: physics, electronics and nanoelectronics, radiophysics, infocommunication technologies and communication systems, radio engineering. Seven theoretical and applied departments, as well as a laboratory of mathematical modeling of physical processes, train specialists, bachelors, masters and postgraduates. The faculty has two departments that were created on the basis of enterprises and scientific institutions: the department of digital technologies in radio engineering at the Yaroslavl Radio Plant and the basic department of nanotechnology in electronics of National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”, Valiev Physics &Technology Department, Yaroslavl.
